It is a known fact that moving is one of the ten most stressful life changes a person can go through.
Therefore, chances are good that even the most organized person in the world will forget
something. Adding the following items to your own “To Do” list will help reduce that stress and
ensure a smooth move.
- Medical Records – Contact your family doctor, any specialists you use, your dentist, your
veterinarian, etc. and obtain copies of your records. This will make things a lot easier when
you are trying to get established in your new neighborhood.
- School Records – These records are usually required when transferring your child to a new
school. Often, these records must be certified and sealed by the former school, so make sure
you get them well in advance.
- Telephone Books – This is often an overlooked item, but keeping a copy of your local
telephone book can come in handy when you are trying to tie up loose ends.
- Your New Address – Keep your new information handy. Make up a card for your wallet so
you can let people know where to send final bills, how to keep in touch with old friends,
forward mail, etc.
- Hidden Valuables – Remember to collect all your hidden valuables. Do you have a safe
deposit box? Do you have a safe hiding place in your home? Be sure to collect them before
moving. Valuable items such as jewelry should be carried by you to your new home, not
packed on the moving van.
- Off Premise Items – Collect all items that are at the dry cleaners, in storage, or out for
repairs. Also remember to return items in your possession, such as library books, movie
rentals, etc.
- Pets – In most cases, the moving van is not allowed to transport animals or plants. Plan
ahead to ensure their safe transfer.
- Remote Controls – Lots of people forget to leave the garage door opener for the new
residents. Take it out of your car before you leave.
- Spare Keys – Remember to collect any keys you may have given out to family, neighbors or
friends. Is there a spare hidden under a rock in the garden? Gather them all together for the
new owners.
- Cleaning Supplies - Most cleaning supplies fall into the category of “hazardous materials”
and can’t be transported to your new home, so leave them out for a final “once over” before
closing the door behind you.
